For what it's worth, Kent, I agree with you that writers (even unemployed newspaper types) are far more likely to go with either their own blog or a loose federation model like John Battelle's FM or 9rules or blogcritics. And I think they would be right to.Oh, and Eric stopped by my blog too and commented on a Gather.com post -- he's been a busy boy :-)

Hi Kent. Thank you for adding your thinking to this. For what its worth, Eric Olsen stopped by to comment. As far as the VC money goes, well ain't it the truth - we have highs and low in tech. No doubt about it. But eBay, Yahoo et al went through it and now they're stronger than ever. So, these periods in which buyouts happen ebb and flow, but that's not the same as going away forever. Maybe local news online won't happen until after the next low tide. Maybe it won't "take" this time out. And maybe everything gets cheaper later. Since we all know this, why doesn't Google cash out and hang on until the next crash? Because if they do, someone else will swoop in and steal their market. So I see investment in local news before the next crash. (I even encouraged Eric to stake his own claim.) We'll see how this flies. If it doesn't work out, there'll be another day.
