FeedLounge: What Am I Missing?

I’ve read some good reviews of FeedLounge, the premium (meaning you have to pay for it) RSS feed reader. So the other night I decided to give it a whirl.

I signed up, paid via Paypal (the official and convenient payment service for Web 2.0) and imported my feeds. To say I am underwhelmed would be an understatement.

First of all, the layout is nothing revolutionary. Granted, you can easily switch between 3 different views (3 pane vertical, 3 pane mixed and 2 pane), but there’s nothing particularly novel about the way content displays. You can tag RSS content, which would be great if I could think of a good reason why I would want to. Tagging is like Pink Floyd’s song Money- the first 10,000 times I heard it I thought it was cool. Now I’m sick of it, but it still gets played about every half hour.

But none of that is the real problem. The real problem is that FeedLounge seems slower than freeze dried molasses. By comparison, Bloglines seems like greased lightning. At times, FeedLounge seems to be about as responsive as Bloglines. At other times, it seems much slower. I might pay for a lot faster. The same or slower doesn’t seem all that pay-worthy.

Another problem is the updating formula. Bloglines FAQ says it checks for updated content every hour. I didn’t have my team of mathematicians with me so I couldn’t decipher the FeedLounge FAQ on this point, but it seems that FeedLounge checks for updates somewhere between every half hour (twice as good) to every 48 hours (48 times worse).

Someone please tell me what I’m missing.

  • Steve, tagging a feeditem is a way of 'keeping' it, as you mention the use case in NewsGator Outlook.
  • Read my prior posts about Web 2.0 combined with my recent posts about the boom/bust/bubble and you'll see I'm not quite the Web 2.0 cheerleader you think I am.

About Paypal- I made that comment because all 3 of the Web 2.0 premium services I have bought used Paypal as either a or the only payment option. I find paying by Paypal to be a far better method than giving my credit card number all over the web. I've used Paypal for years.

And, yes, I believe Paypal does have something to do with Web 2.0- it is benefitting from the fact most of these services seem to use it as a payment option.

I really really hope that was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek, ironic comment, but unfortunately I'm fairly sure you were being serious.

You really have been swallowed up by the marketing hype about "Web 2.0" haven't you? The more I read about it, the more I realise it's like some pathetic little cult of people who have been tricked into believing in something that doesn't exist.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS WEB 2.0!!!!

And PayPal has been around for years, is a perfectly useful payment method, but really has nothing to do with "Web 2.0".

One day you'll realise, you'll look back on these posts and think "oh dear, what was I thinking".

  • I've never found anything to beat Newsgator which Robert Scoble put me on to when I first started reading blogs and I believe is still his reader of choice. I prefer the Outlook edition because I like the folder approach and the fact that I can keep the posts I want (and search them). They have web and mobile "editions". If you prefer a non-outlook desktop client they now have the rather excellent FeedDemon in their portfolio.
  • You're a little bit of a victim of timing, as the database is getting slammed right now as it catches up.

Try the keyboard navigation though (spacebar, arrow keys), that's one of the big differences.

Also, feel free to post this sort of question in the forums where other users can give you answers.
