Blind and Desperate

Am I the only one who thinks all of these “me too” services being thrown up by AOL lately are tokens of desperation and a lack of vision?

TechCrunch reports that AOL is about to release a “YouTube clone.” This is on the heels of AOL’s recent launch of a MySpace competitor.

It looks to me like AOL is thrashing around in search of something to grab hold of as the walls around its closed system crumble and fall.

I don’t know if AOL can save itself or not, but I don’t think trying to become a Web 2.0 company is the most promising way to try.

I was an A.O.Hell user way back during v.4.0. Today, just like then, their proprietary software sucks up huge hard drive space, sinks it’s claws into the registry and takes over computers like an unwelcome house guest. Lumbering and hype-driven, AOL has always been the worst thing you could put on a P.C. – let alone use to browse the Internet. There are legions of AOL users that will never experience the freedom of exploring the web with their own minds (read: Firefox), because they are spoon-fed drivel from this hot air behemoth.Too expensive.A big system hog.A one trick poney whose only way of reinventing itself is with a Running Man upgrade, which in turn craps on our landfills with unwanted ‘free’ CD’s mailed to millions of households.Put a fork in me. I’m done.
