Great post, your points are right on. Ya gotta give Myspace and Facebook credit however, they have gotten people on their sites, which is the hardest part. My thoughts, in FULL DISCLOSURE I/we are about to launch our own social network with a keen recognition of the downfalls you discussed. (cheesy plug, www.cre8buzz.com) It is a gilded cage, there is not enough overlap between the content (especially the good content) and those looking for good content. It is overwhelming, difficult to find what you want, and if you aren't part of the conversation forget about it. Like, Lycos, Hotbot, Ask, Yahoo, during the search days of the late 90's a Google equivalent will come along offering a better way to social network. Just a matter of time.

I've been a MySpace user - primarily for my band - since 2004. It's annoying, but I have met quite a few friends there and it has definitely helped the band. I joined the Facebook crowd recently. The interface is better in terms of what you can do with it, but it is confusing as HELL. The interface is fine but it is impossible to find the edit sections for editing apps and other elements to the site. They break the first rule of design: make everything accessible and easy to use.I know some who believe you should only connect on the net through blogs or less directly interactive mediums, that social networking is for hormone-saturated kids and perverts. That's partially true, but so is the mall or the beach on a Saturday afternoon in the summer. These are just tools that we can use for our benefit or choose to ignore. The best thing about the net is there is no ONE defining characteristic. I still post a LOT on message boards related to interests I have (sports, music, photography) making them very relevant to me even if the technology is old and outdated.

The answer? A gilded cage. Facebook = MySpace = AOL = the old Internet.
